DOT Fundamentals of Hazardous Materials

Learning objectives

  • Explain what hazardous materials are and describe why it is important to transport hazardous materials safely.

  • List the steps required to transport hazardous materials safely, the roles of individuals and companies involved in the transportation process, and the classes of hazardous materials that may be transported.

  • Describe the reference tools available to help workers ensure the safe transport of hazardous materials.

Course overview

On a daily basis, as you’re commuting to and from work, going to the grocery store, or taking your kids to ball practice, how many semi-trucks do you see on the road? Probably quite a few—and many of them could be carrying hazardous materials. We often don’t consider this fact as we’re going about our daily lives, because more often than not the transportation of hazardous materials is done safely and does not impact us. However, when it comes to the transportation of hazardous materials, if something goes wrong, the situation can get ugly fast.
