Learning Objectives

  • Define common chemistry terms and principles that must be factored in when determining how to safely handle and use a hazardous chemical

  • Describe the sources of information about chemicals that are available at your worksite

  • Identify hazard classifications according to both Hazard Communication and Department of Transportation (DOT) labels and markings

  • Explain what exposure limits are and how air sampling is performed to ensure that those limits are not exceeded

  • List the routes of chemical exposure and describe how an acute or chronic exposure could affect your health

  • Describe the controls that make up the “Hierarchy of Controls” and explain why they’re placed in a specific order

  • List the personal protective equipment you may need when working with hazardous chemicals

  • List the safe handling procedures for transporting, storing, or disposing of hazardous chemicals

  • Describe how to prepare for a hazardous chemical emergency, and what to do in the event of a chemical spill, release, or accident

  • Explain the first-aid steps to take if a hazardous chemical exposure occurs to the eyes or body

Lesson Description

In this lesson, you will learn basic chemistry principles that are essential for performing tasks such as selecting a suitable storage location and choosing PPE. You will also learn critical safety information related to handling workplace chemicals, including hazard communication, air monitoring, safe handling procedures, and what to do if an incident occurs.

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize HAZWOPER work zones and how work tasks in each zone require differing levels of PPE

  • Explain the various levels of HAZWOPER PPE used when working with hazardous chemicals

  • Recognize under what conditions each level of PPE should be used

  • Identify the different types of equipment in each level of PPE, and the features and capabilities of each type

  • Explain the limitations specific to each type of PPE

  • Recognize characteristics that indicate damage to PPE from chemical exposure

  • Identify how to properly use and wear varieties of HAZWOPER PPE

  • Define employee and employer responsibilities

Lesson Description

The purpose of this lesson is to refresh your knowledge of the three HAZWOPER work zones and the four levels of protection and associated types of personal protective equipment (PPE) including their uses, limitations, inspection, and care. One of the most important defenses you have when working with a hazardous substance is PPE which can shield or isolate you from waste site hazards.
